Hywel Williams BSc BVetMed MRCVS (London, 1984)

Director and Practice Owner

Hywel is one of the partners of the practice and has been here longer than he can remember! He grew up in a Welsh-speaking family on a farm in the Conwy Valley, gained a degree in Agriculture from Bangor University before graduating from the Royal Veterinary College, London.

Hywel has developed Celtic Breeding Services, a sheep breeding company attached to the practice.

After 30 years Hywel says he still feels privileged to be doing a job that he really enjoys and being a member of the farming community. When not at work, he can be found at home farming or mountain walking.

Philip Thomas BVetMed MRCVS (London, 1987)

Director and Practice Owner

Phil, a native Welsh-speaker, grew up in Aberystwyth and is married to Kate. Phil spent a few years in Llandovery and Bridgend in practice, followed by 3 years with VSO in Asia. He then worked in Scotland in mixed practice before returning to join the partnership at Ystwyth Vets.

Phil has an interest in promoting One Health, which is the interaction of the health of animals, humans and the environment. He is on various advisory boards, is a school governor and is one of the Named Veterinary Surgeons for Aberystwyth University.

The only boards you won’t catch Phil on are surfboards and snowboards (he’s not bad on a skateboard though). When not working Phil runs a dad’s taxi service for his 4 children and is often found loitering with poetic intent in various Talwrn y beirdd competitions.

Dafydd Jones MA VetMB MRCVS (Cambridge, 2004)

Director and Practice Owner

Dafydd is a native Welsh speaker from North Wales, where he was brought up on a sheep and cattle farm. He graduated from Cambridge in 2004 and worked at Ystwyth Vets for three years. He returned to work at the practice in 2013 after working in New Zealand and North Wales.

Dafydd enjoys all aspects of mixed practice, but has a special interest in horse and cattle work, and is currently studying for a certificate in large animal medicine.

Kate O’Sullivan MVB MSc CertSAS MRCVS (Dublin, 1988)

Practice Owner

Kate is from Ireland. She is married to Phil and is a fluent Welsh speaker. Kate worked in Llandeilo followed by 3 years VSO in Asia, then completed an MSc in Edinburgh (tropical veterinary medicine) before coming to Aberystwyth.

She has a special interest in orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery and cardiology, completing the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2004.

Kate is an external lecturer for the equine course at Aberystwyth University and in her spare time can be found mountain running and biking, training for triathlons, orienteering or skiing!

Diane Heyder-Bruckner BSc BVSc MRCVS (Bristol, 2007)

Practice Owner

Diane is French, grew up in Spain, and now is learning Welsh. She has worked in New Zealand, Welshpool, and Llanrwst before coming to Aberystwyth at the end of 2011. She enjoys all aspects of mixed practice, and is currently studying for a certificate in small animal medicine.

When not working, Diane enjoys outdoor activities (weather permitting) including running, swimming and hill walking, and spending time with her rescue dogs and cat and two young children.

Gethin James BVSc (Hons) MRCVS (Bristol, 2007)

Gethin is a Welsh-speaking local lad from a farming family. He saw practice at Ystwyth Vets and chose to join us after graduating. Gethin enjoys all aspects of veterinary work, has a particular interest in reproduction of sheep and cows and is a member of Celtic Breeding Services.

When he’s not working, Gethin can be found farming his own farm, looking after his Suffolk sheep and suckler cows, or following his interest in sports.

Glesni Arfon-Powell BVSc MRCVS (Liverpool, 2007)

Glesni, a Welsh speaker, comes originally from Anglesey, and joined the practice straight from college. She has a special interest in oncology and cardiology, and currently divides her time between the practice and rearing her small son, baking, and running her bespoke home craft business, Crefftau’r Bwthyn.

Hannah Hunt  BVetMed DVM MRCVS (London, 2015)

Hannah is from Cardiff and joined the practice in September 2015. She enjoys all aspects of mixed practice but has a particular interest in farm and equine work.

In her spare time, Hannah enjoys sports including running, is a keen baker and is currently learning welsh.

Iwan Lewis  BSc BVSc MRCVS (Bristol, 2016)

Iwan is a Welsh speaking farmer's son from a sheep and beef suckler farm outside Machynlleth. Iwan saw practice with us as a student and decided to join us after graduating from Bristol university.

Iwan enjoys all aspects of mixed practice but has a special interest in farm animal work.

In his spare time, Iwan enjoys all sports and plays for a local rugby team, sings in a male voice choir and spends time at home on the farm.

Richard Pizzey   BVetMed MRCVS (London, 2015)

Richard grew up around Derbyshire and Staffordshire. He has worked in Carmarthenshire and Staffordshire, mostly focusing on farm animals, before joining Ystwyth in October 2017. Although he enjoys cattle and sheep work, Richard is looking forward to working with a wider range of species.

Outside of work Richard is normally out and about riding his bike, racing it when time allows. He also enjoys hiking and eating lots of cake.
